struggling with the DVD burner

my brain aches from google. maybe somebody here just knows.

I have .avi files. I want them to be DVDs.

Toast 6 will convert/burn them, but they have no audio and don't look that hot. I can change them quickly to .mov files, and i get sound, but then the picture is all blocky-pixelated. I burned .mpg files that turned out fine.

I know that quicktime will go from .mov to .mpg, but it takes for. freaking. ever., and it's mpg4, which i don't know if it will work or not, and it takes so long i'm hesitant to try.

so, does somebody know how to, reasonably quickly:

-turn avi into dvd
-turn avi into mpg
-turn mov into mpg

any of those would be good. or, if you could just tell me what toast wants from me.

what do you WANT from me?! *sobs*

ICON LOVE.

Um, that's all. I really have no clue about video files. Sorry.

Well, to turn avi into mpg, you want tmpg. Not exactly *quick*, but it gets the job done quite well.

But don't forget to go in and change it to 'highest quality' - I think that's the bottom button in the options.

some recs?

I use Nero ExpressVision 3 to make .avi files into simple DVDs
it's really really reaaaaaaaaally easy and it lets you do pretty
menus too. (TMPGEncDVDAuthor can do this as well, but it's really intended for COMPLEX dvds -- and I do NOT recommend it for a beginner)
Like TMPG , the mpeg2 functionality (which you need in order to make DVD-compliant mpeg files) is 30 days only unless you *purchase* the program.

For mov to mpg I recommend a program called WinAVI video converter -- it will actually allow you to convert a LOT of different video formats (not Matroska or OGGVorbis -- those are another thing entirely) to AVI, DVD, RM or WMV. And it's really really easy.

You can find program downloads at

As well as GUIDES for any other related issues.
