so true, so true. So then I wrote this drabble for no particular reason, but it exists in the same universe as my AU. Sigh, why do I like making James such an insensative bastard? (more lupin for you, Nny, and btw I've had the Lupin song stuck in my head for DAYS)

What You Don't Know

"I can't do this!" James moaned. "I can't get married!"

"Why not?" Remus asked reasonably. "You want to marry Lily, don't you?"

"Yes!" James replied reflexively. "No! I do, but it's bloody forever! I'm only 20!"

"Then tell her you want to put it off," Remus suggested.

"Bit late now, isn't it?!" James snarled. "It's… I… dammit, forget it!"

"James…"

"What do you know about it anyways, you ponce!" James yelled. "It's not like you'll ever do this, is it?!"

Remus said nothing, but in his suddenly clenched fist, the gold band bit into his third finger under its glamour.

Oh geez. That is so sad. I do understand that James is on edge, but I remember what he says later, so I have no sympathy!

I would like to see the circumstances that led up to Remus and Sirius keeping it secret. Because Remus didn't know that James didn't want them together.

i was going to just write something to show this rather than tell it, but RL is kicking my ass, so here's the short answer (bearing in mind that this is all within my AU):

Remus is aware that James is not very accepting of gay people in general, but sort of tolerant of him if he doesn't talk about it much. Remus 'making' Sirius gay as well would be far over the line, so he's been pushing to keep it secret, even while Sirius is begging to tell his best friend, under the excuse that "he'll just have to get used to it."

Remus is very much aware that James would hate them together; what Remus doesn't know is that Sirius had already talked to James about it, and James had threatened to keep both of them away from Harry. Sirius is furious about the whole thing, but won't tell Remus because he doesn't want him to be hurt as well.

Remus has no idea that James would take things that far, and clearly neither did Sirius. That's what the last-minute hurt and fighting and Secret Keeper switching was all about.
