what do you all use to make your websites? mine is all handcoded right now, which is nice, but it makes updating a pain in the ass, and i just need to redo everything.

so what do you use? is it easy to update with it? will it work on OS X? is there something on OS X that will do it?

I use Dreamweaver (on a mac!) - I still do most of my coding by hand, but it's really nice to have the syntax color coded. :) And for when I *do* want things to help me along, it's much easier to do some things (like making image maps, for example, which I hate doing by hand). It's also easy to update, and there's a nice preview fuction.

And tables. Gah.

I second this. And as a student, you can likely DW through your campus store? I can through mine, so it's not totally alarming. DW is available for both mac and PC.

dreamweaver seems to be the big hit. i wonder if it's on my campus' server with the other software.

mm, preview function.

Heh, I actually use it at work as well, where I'm forced to work on a crappy windows machine, but I like it so much better on a mac because the interface is more fluid, and it's... well, prettier. :) <3333 macs

I've given up on hand-coding, which I used to do almost exclusively. And I can't be bothered to learn how to use Dreamweaver, so I'm sticking with good ol' FrontPage. With FP, you can upload to the server straight from the program, provided you have the FP extensions enabled on your server. I just use an FTP program to upload stuff, since it takes less time and is a little less messy - to me at least. I have, however, been reading a lot about PHP, and I'm considering actually learning enough of that to convert my pages, as it apparently makes things easier to update...

Except, you know, all the pages my predecessor made using frontpage were just a huge mess, code-wise. Like, hundreds of unnecessary and cluttery tags. I dunno if this was a matter of this person doing crazy stuff, or of the software being like when you make a web page with Word. ?

It used to do that for me too, yeah, but the newer version seems to be OK with the code. I dunno why...

yeah, that's part of the mess, that usually i just html my fic right from word and the tags are such a huge mess, but it's easy so i go on doing it.

i should look into getting dreamweaver from campus someplace, that seems to be what people like most.

heh. DW even has a command called clean up WORD html. :D

It's way easy to use. I teach workshops. In two hours for the basics, and that's given that half the folks are dingbats and we spend an hour of that going back over stuff they're supposed to know before the workshop.

I handcode at home for my personal site (which is so tiny it doesn't need anything more) and at work I use Dreamweaver. Which I still sometimes have difficulty using.

On my personal site, I use SSI (Server Side Includes) so that if I want to change something like the style or page footers or headers or whatnot, I only have to edit a few files.

I too am tempted to convert to PHP/SQL, which would be a much more advanced version of what I'm doing with SSI... But I'm lazy.

(What are 'Ellen's creepy YM noises'?)

Sara insists that the sounds of people signing on and off of Y!m, which she'd never heard before, sounds like something out of a horror flick. She jumped mile the first time someone signed on. *cackles madly, turns sound up*

hmm, that sounds promising.

ellen's Yahoo Messenger makes all these noises that are really loud and realistic, doors slamming and creaking open and things, and it's weirding me out because i didn't know what it was at first.

I do a simple HTML via DreamWeaver and then handcode my CSS. It makes life a lot easier.

HyperEdit (http://www.tumultco.com/HyperEdit/) rules my world, man. It's lightweight and customizable, and you can try it out all you want before deciding to give them money. *hearts* it.

the editors do look scary, it's one of the reasons i've been handcoding all this time, but the site is so cluttered, that i pretty much have to start all over anyway, so now's a good time to learn.
