mousapelli: (surrounded by idiots)

is it just me, or is there a lot of unwarrented snobbery going around in a bunch of fandoms at the moment? [livejournal.com profile] musesfool and i were just talking last night about some questionable Alexander spelling arguments, and then today there was some heated debate about terminology over on Ff.net in Yu-Gi-Oh! fandom.

Well, as heated as Ff.net ever is, which means people leave snide author's notes at the beginning of their fics. Armed with the first batch of YGO DVDs, i can tell you that two of the snob reports are crap.

Myth #1: The Millenium Items were created 3000 ago, not 5000. Don't trust the dubs!

Fact: Er, no. I may have the Japanese skills of a speech-impaired monkey, but i can tell you that the Japanese says "Go Sennen" or '5000' right in the little pre-theme explanation. It's the one thing my bootleg Hong Kong DVDs actually have subbed correctly.

Besides, if Yami lived 5000 years ago, that puts him right on the line between the mythological pharaohs and the ones that are on the King List. 3000 years ago has him right in the middle of recorded history. So, no.

and you can thank Hikaru no Go for my number comprehension.

Myth #2: The lighter half of a Millenium pair is never called 'hikari' in the show, it's a fan term. The real word is 'omote'.

Fact: well...I'm not going to say they don't use the word 'omote', or 'surface personality' in the show, lord knows the Millenium Siamese Twins refer to each other in all sorts of bizarre ways, none of which sound good in english. But I will tell you that right in the intro, they do say that Yugi has both darkness (yami) and light (hikari) in his heart. so to say that it isn't canon is pretty much crap. it's like the fifth sentence you hear, in fact.

So, uh, step off, tools. Although it does amuse me to know that Dark Bakura calls Ryou "Lord Landlord" upon occasion.

The people who spread such myths are the ones who never bother to actually check their fandom facts, which is just sad. *bemoans the state of fandom*

it would be okay if they weren't so freaking mean about it. I mean, if you are expecting quality fic and can brook nothing less, wtf are you doing on ff.net?

Honestly, I wish that I was much further into the series so that I would be qualified to shoot my mouth off as well, but the truth is that because the subs are so bad, entertaining though they are, i have to watch and listen really hard, and usually end up rewinding a couple times an episode, so I'm only up to 11. When i trust the subs i can crochet or something while I watch, but with these i can't do anything else except concentrate.

but somehow, seeing Pegasus referred to continally as 'Helena' is kind of making up for that *snerk*

Helena? XD

I'm over at ff.n right now, actually, and you got deleted? That's just wrong. I'm so glad I only go there every once in a while.

*grumbles about this* given the crap that's on here, it is pretty irritating. I'm back on again as 'mousapellikun'.

Maybe it's arrogant to think someone must be as a bodhisattva to these noobs, and that somebody might as well be me, but I have to tell you, i get a lot of reviews that are like "you mean it's possible to write decent fanfiction? you've changed my life!"

so, even if they qualify that with "i hope you rnt implying thee gay", I just sort of keep that part to myself.

Eh, at least half of them are the sort who wouldn't recognize a boddhisattva if it took them on a tour of Nirvana. (You're not going to start meddling in people's lives while sitting around in partially-transparent clothes, are you?)

The one thing about ffn is that there's so much slash/shounen ai over there that you're probably more likely to get people demanding you pair this male character with this other male character, not that male character over there OMG dont u no nething?

the glory of the internet is that nobody would know if i was doing it right now.

also, your use of the Sanzo icon in conjunction with this statement is priceless.

Any talk of religion automatically begs the glorious Sanzo's presence. It's the rule of my icon rotation. :D

People are still arguing about those things? Wow. It's been a year since I was in the YGO fandom and they haven't found anything new to bitch about? How sad.

Could the 3000/5000 year difference be a manga/anime thing? I remember a lot of the 'japanese-name' authors (you know what I mean) saying it was 3000 years long before the anime was subbed or the early raws were available. But I'm not sure it really matters. ^^ 3000, 5000, for the purposes of most fan fic, who cares?

And the hikari/yami thing . . . oi.

*flees* Will not be pulled back into YGO, will not be pulled back into YGO . . . .

well, now that everything is over, it isn't like new info is forthcoming, plus it is ff.net, so the majority of people are probably just watching the English releases, and the WB is only up to the Waking the Dragons Arc still.

so, it's gonna be awhile.

Could the 3000/5000 year difference be a manga/anime thing?
could be, i suppose. I've only seen the english stuff in terms of manga, which obviously says 5000. it might also be a first series/second series issue. I've seen the first three subbed, and since Yugi doesn't really know what's going on for quite some time, I don't know if anything concrete ever gets said.

And the hikari/yami thing . . . oi.
haha, I know what you mean, but on the other hand, who can resist the hot of two-people-in-one-body sex? of course, digging through the millions of eye-stabbing fics for something decent is so painful you may as well write it youself, but still.

You can't tell me Dark Bakura isn't taking advantage of his situation.
