New electrical powers story: My powerbook charger caught fire.

I was just sitting here, minding my own business! Playing KH2! I wasn't even HOLDING the powerbook, and i reached over to im [livejournal.com profile] maho_kiwi and said "hunh, that little sunbeam there looks a lot like smoke."

and then suddenly there was a PFFFT and a cute little MUSHROOM CLOUD and when i reached down to yank the thing out of the powerbook, there were HUGE BLUE SPARKS and a voice saying "what are you doing, Dave?".

"Well," i said when the apple support guy said my 90 days were up for phone support but wanted to know what my issue was, "my charger caught fire."

"It..." There was a pause. "It...what? Are you sure?"

"Am i sure that it caught fire?"

"...........let me get a powerbook specialist."

So new charger mailed out Monday, no charge! The powerbook is undamaged, and i dug out the beat non-apple ibook charger i had, which'll do just fine for a few days, but the powerbook charger is all melted and scorched and gnarly.

My brother says i am not allowed to touch anything of his, and rightly so!

Well, that's completely alarming! However, I am so glad you were home and awake and in the room. Do you know/remember the story of my thermostat catching on fire? Much as that sucked (well, and was funny; the firemen kept poking the live wires with a screwdriver and leaping back and cussing about the sparks because the fusebox was Very Badly Labeled and it took about 386498535 tries to actually cut power to the bathroom), I was so. very. lucky that it didn't happen a couple of days later, as we'd have been gone away for Christmas at the folks, and we'd have returned to like, charred remains.

oh my goodness! That is terrible, but at the same time *snicker* befuddled firemen!

Yeah, i could have been sitting right here and STILL not seen it, if i were looking at the TV, so i was really lucky. I don't think my bedspread got scorched at all, or anything. I think it's because i've been stuck midporn for like four days, and the powerbook just couldn't take it anymore.

Yes.

And yes, you melted your powerbook charger with half-in-the-middle-of porn. *nods*

yeah, they had a recall on those I believe, my father's started getting really really hot (as in, you actually couldn't touch it for fear of second degree burns) so we checked up with apple, they're was a recall, some ass at the company had forgotten to order a certain part to go into them which would prevent them from heating...something like that O_o

i think mine was more about the wiring breaking from being bent back and forth too much, but still, that has always been a problem with apple chargers and i really see no reason why they can't do something about that. The ibook went through like three of them, i finally started buying non-apple ones cause they were too expensive.

Ah well. The powerbook has some interesting quirks because of it's metal casing, so i'm trying to decide whether i want to switch back to ibooks (or macbooks, or whatever) for the next computer.

Oh my god, this made me laugh so hard. You have officially had a worse day. I wonder if you could set my cable company on fire....

haha, i can TRY! i just need to get close enough to like touch them, or get them on my lap, or something.

Hee, it only lasted like two seconds, so i can't really claim this as the worst day every or anything, and it's actually a little bit funny. I think your internet woes are far outweighing mine, actually.

Are you set up yet? or still waiting?

"my charger caught fire."

"It..." There was a pause. "It...what? Are you sure?"

"Am i sure that it caught fire?"

Oh my god, I shouldn't laugh, but that's a beautifully Mac Powerbook Helpline question to ask you! XD I mean, really... "Well, I'm not sure, but there were flames and smoke and a burning smell..." Gods. Your technitian was probably located in India; most helpline questions get routed over there, and they're supposed to read exactly what you should do off a list (and in the exact order you should do it; if you do it before they tell you to they get all huffy!), but usually they haven't actually touched a Powerbook in their lives... Congratulations for catching someone totally off-guard! :D

...I want you to become a webcomic. And I want to see the tales of your life in beautiful comic format that I can one day buy in a callendar and put on my wall for good laughs. XD ♥

haha, no go ahead, i'm laughing too. It's so RIDICULOUS, i'll be telling this story for ages.

I actually don't think i've ever had punjab support from apple, i tend to get pretty helpful people without any accents, anyhow. As opposed to like, netgear, where i flagrantly get a guy with a laminated checklist.

This guy just seemed shocked! as well he should have been. but the powerbook specialist was like "yeah, that's usually where they go up. But most people don't actually get fire."

Anytime you want to webcomic me, you just go right on ahead, sweetie. My genius lies only in prose.

I think I might just have to start sketching some o' that... XD D'you have a characature you oft use/associate with, or am I semi-free to pull something outta my butt given that I'm a 'tard and don't remember what you look like if you've ever posted picchas XD?

There's actually training to get rid of accdents, from what I've heard... But then, I hear this from my idiot computer tekkie who calls them despite knowing what the problem is and how to fix it. >_> I think he does it for kicks.

Haha, if you want to, go crazy. it sounds fun! You can do whatever you like, usually if i'm doodling me doing something i use, you know, a mouse. I'm kind of nondescript and things :) I used to have like distinguishing characteristics, like long hair and glasses, but now i have shoulder length hair and glasses.

So have a good time! go nuts.

Dude.

Mine's charging upstairs right now. Hang on.... Okay, it's unplugged now. That's freaky as heck. Good thing you were there at the time!

And good on Apple for replacing it free of charge despite it being out of warranty. I knew there was a reason I liked them. (Aside from their kick-ass computers and cool stores with the genius bars and neato adorable commercials.)

yeah, i was lucky, but honestly, i've had lots of these things die, but never actually had one FLAME at me before. Crazyness.

It actually IS still under warranty, just my phone support period is up because i don't have applecare. But i suspect that if you call them and say their product SET ITSELF ABLAZE, they would probably take care of that for you, yes.

I almost resurrect this icon for you:

...and yikes. I had a nasty spark on a really old pbook charger years and years ago too, it scorched a nice hole in a nearby sock. :x but yey for apple techs and getting a replacement, their helpline is always fabulous.

heee! that is a good icon indeed! I just bought the first season, so I've been watching them all over. "No fair! You changed the outcome by observing it!"

Yikes! yeah, those things fray and are actually pretty dangerous, but i've never had one do anything like this before. Oh, electronics.

I bought a new power cord for my iBook after the outer plastic detached slightly from the computer-side plug... the wires didn't snap and it still works fine, but it's wrapped up reeeeeeeeeal good with electrical tape. And I try to remember to unplug that one before I leave the house, if I ever have reason to use it.

Now I'm going to be doubly careful to unplug it.

Yeesh. ;)

yeah, mine always fray there and end up wrapped in duct tape, especially when Mulciber used to chew on them to get my attention, and I've bought three or four replacement ones at this point. You'd think they'd DO something about that, but it's the one thing that never seems to improve.

anyway, at least i got this one for free!
