mousapelli: (rat in a cage)
[personal profile] mousapelli
So Atobe's trip to the vet was about as positive as a trip to the vet with a lumpy rat can possibly be. It was indeed an abscess, which isn't wonderful, but is a hell of a lot better than a tumor which is the other thing lumps mostly are in rats.

He got drained, and was apparently totally okay with that since it involved being cuddled by pretty female vets. He's still doing fine, eating and moving about and back in the cage with his brothers, but I have antibiotics to give him twice a day and am supposed to keep a real scab from forming if at all possible so it can drain more if it has to.

Um, ew. His little shaved patch of belly is pretty damn funny though.

SOOOO glad to hear it was an abscess, having had two very lumpy rats myself. It sounds like he's a trooper.

eh, so long as people are giving him froot loops and scratching his belly, Atobe could really care less what's going on...

I was relieved too. It's one of the reasons I get boy rats, cause they get tumors much less frequently than the girls, knock on wood.

That's the kind of pet I need. Oreo flipped out when she went to the vet, and I had to sing to her all the way home.

Elwing_alcyone and I were just talking about how cool you are over on her journal.

lol, I see! That's very flattering, since I don't feel like i've been particularly cool since this whole job thing started...

We were discussing your cute rats and Olly mentioned an old Death Note/Hikaru No Go story.

Yeah, I haven't been cool since I joined Dr. Seuss fandom. :P

:3 It's good that your rat is okay. It would have really sucked if he wasn't.

*pets your poor abscessed rat* I'm glad he'll be all right--it's really hard on pet's owners when they can understand what's going on, and one really wonders if the pet does.

Excuse me, though, while I try not to snicker madly about the fact that you have a rat named Atobe. That's just darling. XD

Yup, he's scampering about like usual.

The rats are pretty sentient, so I'm generally sure that they know everything I know, especially in terms of what's going on with them. It's one of the reasons I wasn't too worried about Atobe, because he didn't seem worried about whatever was going on, even when we were poking at him.

Atobe, Shishido, and Ohtori ^_^ there used to be Jiroh too, but he died of some weird thing last summer. The boys are about a year and five months old now, I got them as little teensy five-week-old things last winter.

Atobe is such a queen, you have no idea. If you are petting somebody else, he's right there, getting all up in your business. "Hey! Hey, me me!!"

I love the idea of sentient rats--my own cat is a darling, and he's fat and cuddlesome, but he's kind of like Pooh: a cat of much cuddliness, but a very small brain. Though he can play fetch. ^^

And awwww! I didn't know that pet rats could be affectionate and want petting and the like. <3 Poor little Jirou. Are they named for their colours, or just because the names entertained you? And did you give Atobe the name before or after he started demonstrating his queenliness? ^_~

yeah, rats are pretty intelligent, about the same as cats, but they have a doggish sort of affection and need for attention. The problem with them having such great little personalities is that they don't live very long (2-3 years) so it's really heartbreaking when they die and it happens too fst.

Well, they are all different colors. Atobe is blue, Shishido is black, and Ohtori is siamese. this is them:

I named them right when i got them, but they all turned out to be named perfectly. Atobe was always supposed to be the blue one, so it just worked out. it was luck that Shishido turned out to be grumpy about being petted when he really wants to be on the inside, and Ohtori is the biggest and all mellow.

*squeals and FLAILS!* Oh, my goodness, they're DARLING! (And the idea of your Shishido being grumpy, your Atobe being a queen, and your Ootori being mellow... *dies*) From the looks of the cage, they don't use wood chips or the like for bedding, do they?

Yeah... that's the sad part about rodent-type pets. ;_; I used to keep hamsters, but it was just too hard when they died after what seemed like such a short period. I do hope your Atobe-rat has stopped chewing off his scabs! >.<

Do they live in wood-chips

Y-you named your rat _Atobe_?
*blinks*

Glad to hear is wasn't a tumor though. (...I have no idea what an abscess is, but as long as it's better than a tumor)

Yup, there's Atobe, Shishido, and Ohtori, actually. They are such fat, furry hedonists, I love rats.

An abscess is the fancy name for a cut that got really, really infected, and actually turns into just a big lump of gross stuff. If it doesn't break open on its own, you have to go to the vet (or doctor in people cases) and get it lanced open to get all the goo out, otherwise it'll just keep on getting more and more infected from the inside out.

It's very gross. But just necessitates antibiotics, rather than cancer, which is incurable really.

At my old camp, we weren't allowed to touch the rat, since it just gave birth. It made me sad, and that was the only time I've seen a rat.... mice are smaller and don't bite as hard

Are they all male?

and ew. that sounds really gross and scary and I'm going to have nightmares now. *hides*

From: [identity profile] mousapelli.livejournal.com
yeah, but mice also smelly and are stupid and don't really enjoy being your pet in any way. Rats are clean and affectionate! And also don't ever bite if they are domestic ones who've been handled by people. Mine wouldn't bite pretty much no matter what you did.

Yup, mine are all boys. Boys are so fat and lazy and happy! The girls are fun too, but they always have to be scampering around and making nests and things. The boys are happy to snuggle and eat cookies with you.

I actually wanted a rat, because mice were so small, and I was scared I would squish it.

But my mom said no.

Now I want a rat again.
