mousapelliI just learned to make the laptop type in Japanese! On purpose, not like when i was in Japan and did it a lot in such a way that not even Japanese people could fix it.

It even does the thing where i hit space and it changes my kana into Kanji! SO COOL. Shockingly, this is not helping me write my JE_Holiday fic. However, i have a strange hotkey question. my little menu bar dropdown says the following:
what on earth key is "^"? Because I make ^ by hitting shift+6, and that is for sure not how i produce Japanese on my computer.

Date: 2007-12-02 07:23 am (UTC)hilariously, i didn't know what やくして meant, so I went to type it into the little translator, but when i hit space, it kanjified it into 訳して, which was identical to the "Translate!" button. LOL.
curiously, atashi and watashi kanjify into the same thing. I was kind of indignant, because i wanted the girly version!

the ^ is indeed control, it just didn't do anything in terms of switching. I think it conflicts with too many application hotkeys to be a universal one. Now I have apple+space set to "revert to last input" and option+apple+space set to "next input on list" and it all works just fine.
今日キーボードは日本です〜！
(Does 今日 need a particle when you use it like that? because I know it's "今日はここで眠りたい." Should it be 今日は、キーボードが。。。？)
It's really disturbing how I learn half my Japanese from KAT-TUN...

I think you'd need to rearrange the sentence a bit or use something else... or stuck in another particle.
I'm still fairly beginner, but maybe:
今日、キーボードは日本のです。Today, the keyboard is a Japanese one.
今日、キーボードは日本ぽいです。Today, the keyboard is Japanese-like.
今日、キーボードは日本けいです。Today, the keyboard is Japanese-style.
今日、キーボードは日本のキーボードです。Today, the keyboard is a Japanese keyboard.
Or something like that.

Date: 2007-12-02 04:31 pm (UTC)In terms of dictionary, I was using the Random House one that I bought at random at a Borders when I first started trying to figure things out, and although it's in no way what a serious Japanese student needs, I found it did everything I needed until just recently. I only outgrew it when I started needing to find more Kanji instead of sounding things out.
So if you're looking for something that won't cost you a million dollars but is pretty functional, that one worked well for me.
When we were in Japan, Tabs's accent was so good people would start rattling things off to her, and we'd have to be like "あの。。。ちょっと日本語。。。”
Ironically, aside from "りょへいくんだいすき！" it was probably the Japanese phrase I used the most successfully.
