Baking Fail but Wordpress Win
Dec. 21st, 2008 08:22 pm

Baking stuff for people at school, but the whole thing was kind of fail and i ended up breaking a dish full of buttery stuff all over my floor. ugh.
I've been dicking around with the site some more, so looks like we're getting ready for the big move. I migrated over the AftS! site and set up databases for both fic and for translations, and I've been sort of thinking about what I want the outside pages to be or look like. It's just overwhelming when there's so much stuff to do, because I keep getting distracted from one thing to do another and another and then nothing really gets done the whole way.
But mostly I am very happy with Wordpress; it does everything I want it to do, and all the changes i've wanted to make have been easy ones. I spend a lot of time looking up things, but it's just that I don't know how to use it so much, and I've learned some baby CSS now too.

Date: 2008-12-22 01:47 am (UTC)hey, is there a way on a page to get WP to display all categories, or years, or something like that? I'm trying to figure out what to put on the main fic and translation page, but i'd obviously rather it were something that brought up a list rather than having to recode it every time i add a tag or a year or a category or whatever.

Date: 2008-12-22 02:08 am (UTC)I have some special code to list all the tags but I haven't checked if there's a function for that now in the latest version. I'd try wp_list_tags() and see what happens.
I also have some special code to list the tags within a specific category, but again that might be built-in now. If you can't find functions for those, let me know.
For years:
wp_get_archives('type=yearly&show_post_count=1');

Date: 2008-12-22 02:59 am (UTC)The archives are automatically generated, though, so you shouldn't have to actually select archive.php. By default, there's usually a category listing in sidebar.php or if not, you can add the category code there.
I did a custom template for the front page, so I needed to select it for that.

Date: 2008-12-22 05:44 am (UTC)A combination of those things finally produced the right dropdown, so now I can indeed use the templates and get this whole front page thing working. aish, what a mess. It looks like this (http://www.kira-kira.net/translation/?page_id=29) right now, so it's coming along.
Looking at the list of possible template tags, it doesn't seem to me that there's a way to get a plain list of tags, but you can get a tag cloud. I'm not a cloud fan, but I reset the values of smallest and biggest to be the same number as a workaround for now. Since I don't have any tags on the translation database, we'll have to wait and see.
Thanks for helping to sort me out, I appreciate it. It seems like most of the hard junk is out of the way, and I'm hoping to be in the just uploading stories stage soon. The last interesting problem I foresee is that I'm not sure how I'm going to force the Pages links to go from the fic side to the translation side of the site given that they run on two different databases. I'll keep working on it.
