Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today!

Baking stuff for people at school, but the whole thing was kind of fail and i ended up breaking a dish full of buttery stuff all over my floor. ugh.

I've been dicking around with the site some more, so looks like we're getting ready for the big move. I migrated over the AftS! site and set up databases for both fic and for translations, and I've been sort of thinking about what I want the outside pages to be or look like. It's just overwhelming when there's so much stuff to do, because I keep getting distracted from one thing to do another and another and then nothing really gets done the whole way.

But mostly I am very happy with Wordpress; it does everything I want it to do, and all the changes i've wanted to make have been easy ones. I spend a lot of time looking up things, but it's just that I don't know how to use it so much, and I've learned some baby CSS now too.

i guess it's mine too since Marty deserted me this weekend D:

hey, is there a way on a page to get WP to display all categories, or years, or something like that? I'm trying to figure out what to put on the main fic and translation page, but i'd obviously rather it were something that brought up a list rather than having to recode it every time i add a tag or a year or a category or whatever.

wp_list_categories() -- search that out in the docs to see what options you can use.

I have some special code to list all the tags but I haven't checked if there's a function for that now in the latest version. I'd try wp_list_tags() and see what happens.

I also have some special code to list the tags within a specific category, but again that might be built-in now. If you can't find functions for those, let me know.

For years:
wp_get_archives('type=yearly&show_post_count=1');

well, here's the really stupid question: okay, i see the tag, and i found the stuff in the documentation for it, but...where do I put that? what's the actual tag with the parentheses or carats or whatever.

because i've stuck that in a couple different ways and nothing's showing up when i reload the page.

*Feels dumb*

It goes in whatever template you're using, so you have to edit the template file and upload it. It's PHP code so it has to go inside PHP tags.

Here's the code I use on my frontpage.php template:

okay, i see what you're saying. But now I have a new, weirder problem. I cannot find the spot to get a page to use a different template, like archive.php, let's say. My little instructions insist I should have some sort of dropdown or sidebar or something that lets me switch templates, but I don't. The theme I'm using has an archive and a page template, I just can't figure out where to tell it to do the other thing.

Am I just stupid? or does 2.7 do something the directions aren't updated enough for?

I haven't installed 2.7 yet so I can't say for sure. I would look on the sidebar for any sort of +/- thingy that would indicate a javascript hide/show. Probably they cleverly hid it from you in this version.

The archives are automatically generated, though, so you shouldn't have to actually select archive.php. By default, there's usually a category listing in sidebar.php or if not, you can add the category code there.

I did a custom template for the front page, so I needed to select it for that.

okay, nope, i can't work it out. For the sake of argument, I added in a frontpage.php file into my theme's folder just in case it just didn't think i had any extra templates to fiddle around with, and i cannot find any menu or dropdown or anything that says anything about templates, either on the regular sidebar or when i'm actually on the "create new page" page. when I click on page, the only two things under it are 'edit' and 'new', and there's no extra template whatnot on the Page creator page, just boxes for attributes, comments, publish, and custom fields.

since i'm going to certainly want a frontpage, this is distressing.

okay. Sorry for the lag in reply, I got too frustrated and had to go away and come back.

A combination of those things finally produced the right dropdown, so now I can indeed use the templates and get this whole front page thing working. aish, what a mess. It looks like this (http://www.kira-kira.net/translation/?page_id=29) right now, so it's coming along.

Looking at the list of possible template tags, it doesn't seem to me that there's a way to get a plain list of tags, but you can get a tag cloud. I'm not a cloud fan, but I reset the values of smallest and biggest to be the same number as a workaround for now. Since I don't have any tags on the translation database, we'll have to wait and see.

Thanks for helping to sort me out, I appreciate it. It seems like most of the hard junk is out of the way, and I'm hoping to be in the just uploading stories stage soon. The last interesting problem I foresee is that I'm not sure how I'm going to force the Pages links to go from the fic side to the translation side of the site given that they run on two different databases. I'll keep working on it.

CSS is awesome. But old browsers sometimes eat it (it was awful to discover that the day of a massive project..)
