Since Shelbi posted some of the snowpig girls, I suppose I ought to put up some new ones of the boys.

Date: 2010-10-25 12:53 am (UTC)This is the first time I'm actually considering getting one xD But I was thinking in getting a fancy rat too ... what do you recommend? which one is the snuggliest? When I was like 12 I had a hamster, but that's the only rodent I ever had :/ (and he was such a tsundere hamster, not friendly at all... unless you had apple sticks with you lol)

Date: 2010-10-25 01:10 am (UTC)Guinea pigs are more expensive but they live longer if they're healthy. They're pretty affectionate, and if you get them out all the time they can be really good lap pets and are perfectly happy to sit next to you fatly and munch on some food and watch TV with you (boys esp). They don't try to escape usually (Sanapig is an exception) and even when they do, they can't squeeze into tiny holes or anything. Their cages have to be cleaned kind of a lot though, esp since pet stores usually sell guinea pig cages that aren't nearly big enough. Solo guinea pigs are usually fine if you give them lots of attention and their cage is in a spot where people usually are so they can see the action, but a pair is probably better if you can afford it/have the space.
Rats are much smarter and not as clumsy, so they are much more of escape artists. But they're affectionate too, they really like people, and they like the same kinds of snacks as you (salty or sweet things). They aren't so much a lap pet, although boys can be once they're getting older and lazier but the girls are very busy, but you can teach them tricks if you're patient and if you handle them a lot you can get them to ride around on your shoulder. They're much cleaner and you can litter-train them pretty easily. The real downside to rats is that you get totally attached to them, and they only live ~2 years so it's kind of routinely heartbreaking. that's why I'm on a rat break right now. Also you should really get rats in at least pairs, because they have a lot of social behavior that they can't get all from you. Also I always encourage people to get male rats because the female cancer rate is very high, and also because you know you won't end up with 15 accidental rats in a couple weeks.
on the whole I'd say guinea pigs are a little easier but more expensive, and if you're looking to own just one of something I'd go for the guinea pig instead of the rat. But they're both good pets.

Date: 2010-10-25 02:47 am (UTC)I'll hit the pet stores to see both so I can make my final decision. Where I live guinea pigs are everywhere, but it's pretty hard to get rats (hamsters and gerbils are the favorite options).
Thanks again for the help ^^
