The Problem with Dr. Who
Sep. 24th, 2011 12:47 amis that about once a season there is an utterly terrifying episode without any warning, which I inevitably start watching right before I'm supposed to try and sleep. the worst part about it is how good these damn scary episodes are. I wish they would just hire Moffat to write episodes for a purposely scary show rather than just invading this one with no warning every now and then.
the whole thing was super well done and I was kind of hanging in there, with the skeleton dudes in the suits and everything, until they showed that girl's face under the veil and it was all...squooshy. *SHUDDERS* god it was like the Ring all over again.
also the whole thing where the stuttering guy couldn't call after Donna, i was like, oh no! that's not fair! i even kind of thought that would happen but it still filled me with OH NOEZ. also I totally laughed when in the credits they were credited as 'other Dave' and 'proper Dave.'
i'm not enjoying this next one though, about the people stuck on the transport, probably because what I enjoy about the show is cleverness and there's nothing clever about a bunch of people doing stupid panicky things. the other problem is that i don't think netflix will tell me when i'm supposed to throw one of those specials in here.
i am declaring this week officially over and if this next week starts up sucking even a little bit I am declaring that one over too, right away, because this sort of shit needs nipped in the bud.

Date: 2011-09-24 05:04 am (UTC)also is there a list anywhere for where these damned specials go? Netflix really seems confused about it and I don't want to watch a bunch of this junk all out of order.

Date: 2011-09-24 05:24 am (UTC)You mean the specials between S4 and S5? They went The Next Doctor, Planet of the Dead, The Waters of Mars, and The End of Time. (Unless you meant something else. XD)

Date: 2011-09-24 06:12 am (UTC)I've always loved Moffat's eps the most, especially during Russell's tenure. The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances are still two of my favorite episodes, and I love Blink and the two Library eps as well. (I love River!) Oh, and The Girl in the Fireplace was pretty good too. (In fact, TEC/TDD, TGitF and Blink all won Hugos. The Library eps were nominated but DW didn't win that year.)
The thing about Moffat is that he makes the ordinary scary. Gas masks, clocks, dust and dark corners, statues (and not just statues, but statues of ANGELS!) There's more to come in the two seasons where he's the showrunner.
Midnight is a bit of a marmite episode. There are some people on the DW site I frequent who think it's one of the best episodes ever. I didn't love it like that, but I didn't hate it. And whassisname who plays Merlin was in it. :-P
Every series there's a Doctor-lite episode and a companion-lite episode. Generally. Sometimes it's the same ep, like Blink, or Love & Monsters. But in S4, Midnight is Donna-lite, and the next ep, Turn Left, is Doctor-lite. I love Turn Left, but if you're looking for comedy, that's not the ep to watch. (Turn Left was also nominated for the Hugos that year!)

Date: 2011-09-24 02:35 pm (UTC)Yay Rose is back! I really haven't enjoyed anybody else in the same way as I like her, although Donna is actually coming close (because she isn't a romantic replacement).
I frankly thought Midnight sucked, but like I said above, that's just not an episode that I enjoy ever, and also you didn't solve the mystery or anything in the end, they just threw it outside. No cleverness at all, just shrieking people being people at their worst. If i want that, I'll have a meeting at school.
Turn left was okay, I don't typically like the lite episodes as much as most, but I didn't have that much of a serious objection to it, and also Donna's grandfather cracks me the hell up.

Date: 2011-09-24 08:47 am (UTC)Still, crappy timing to get a scary one though. I've been watching the current series with a friend in Utah so since I have to stay up late until he gets in from work it always means I end up watching shit at like 2am which is occasionally more scary than I would like >_>; Hope you got okay sleep in the end anyway ♥
