Back to School Night is over for another year. Huzzah! by which i mean, feh. but miraculously we have tomorrow off for rosh hashanah so at least I don't have to crawl into work tomorrow. If only this could happen every year.

also it will not. stop. raining. every single time I have to go outside it pours, which, now that I travel from building to building during the day, is more often than I at all enjoy. It also made dropping off my car for inspection a special sort of fun, since the bottom of my parents' development, which is the only easy way to get to my garage, totally flooded.

my comms keep splitting and it's driving me crazy. I don't want to follow fifteen comms per fandom, I want to follow ONE, and half the time I barely want to even do that. I'm sick of adding and adding and adding. Do you know how many goddamn comms I belong to? Attention LJ users: LJ lets you sort by tags on your flist! No lie! It's true! If you just want news, TELL IT YOU JUST WANT THE NEWS TAG. If you don't want news, EXCLUDE THE NEWS. It's seriously not hard, guys.

I just feel like it's the same conversation I have constantly with my ever-more-self-involved students, where they say, I want it to be exactly this way that I want, and I say well here you can make it that way yourself, and they say no what I really mean is that i want you to make it that way for me while I make essentially no effort.

Sigh, whatever. Tomorrow I get to sleep in and then have sushi for lunch and I have hopes that I might go a whole couple hours without being rained on.

I feel like you are trying to employ logic here and that is simply not allowed on this planet.

yeah no kidding. A couple days ago I was doing up a word doc on my overhead and I made it do columns and one student was like "HOW DID YOU DO THAT?!" like it was a magic trick.

You know they can't type? They've been using computers since they were tiny babies and not a single one of them can type, they all use two fingers. wth.

I suspected. I read an article some time ago about how people born in like, mid-90s and later are shit at using technology. They can't even Google properly. It's actually really embarrassing.

this is the conversation I've had twenty times so far this year:

student: "I looked up this word and got [something crazy]."
me: "looked it up where?"
student: "google translate."
me: "do you think google translate knows any Latin at all?"
student: "no..."
me: "why don't you try googling, idk, LATIN DICTIONARY?"
student: "eh...."
me: "or try one of these, they are called BOOKS, and this one is shockingly labeled LATIN DICTIONARY."

I like that you are able to insult your students and they just take it. Possibly because they don't know you are insulting them.

that's a pretty regular feature of our interactions, especially in the lower levels.

yeah i don't know what's up with that at all. you'd think even if they didn't type exactly properly, they would have moved out of the two-finger stage in about the second grade.

omfg I loved/hated that game. I loved it because I could get him to go faster and faster and maybe he wouldn't die from the falling blocks and the evil dungeon music was evil. And I hated it because no matter how fast I could go, my dad (who types like 80 wpm) could speed Mario along like it was nothing and I just watched him do it and it made me want to cry.

But seriously. They don't teach typing in school anymore? Really?

I want Rosh Hashanah off, too. :( Although Yom Kippur would be better. I am NOT looking forward through fasting through my busiest day of classes.

You are the only person on the planet who actually knows how to use LJ, just so you know.

we actually still had a problem since back to school night happens after sundown. We've had both of those off for the last couple years though, not because the students population is Jewish so much as a critical mass of the staff/admin staff are, so everybody takes it off as a religious swap.

yeah, I've realized that, it's just, i spend all day being the only competent person in a 100-ft radius and what bothers me about it isn't that that is the situation, it's that everybody else resists my attempts to make them competent at all costs.

Random comment I know you will appreciate: I was at a Pride festival the other weekend and went to a booth about Transgender awareness, and they had a game you could play where you looked at four pictures of people and tried to guess which one was trans. After a few rounds of playing, I turned the page right on a picture of Ohno as one possible female-to-male. LOLLLLLL don't you love it.
