mousapelli: (flying rat)

my CTY roommate just made some little movies of my rat for me with her digital camera! and because the ibook rocks hardcore, it took the movies from her camera with absolutely no problem. so, if you want to see what the mulciber cuteness is all about, here you are (files are all about 3MB):

Mulcie eating a Loop of Froot

Mulcie snuffles the camera and gets his side scratched

Some hardcore froot loop eating

You thought i was lying about him getting bellyrubs, didn't you?

the thigh and occasionally hand are mine. In the last movie you get a good look at the slashes on my hand from his most recent bath. he's not so much for the water.

This week was a bad one for the rat, he had a lice incident. I bought some bedding from walmart to change his cage, and the next day he was CRAWLING with leeeeetle brown specks.

While inspiring immediate terror in the owner with waist-length hair, it turns out that lice are species-specific, so no problem there. furthermore, the solution to lice is actually to feed the rat a tiny bit of horse dewormer, which came from petsmart, and then it gets into his blood and kills any kind of bloodsucker except tapeworms. this shit was amazing, the things were almost gone a few hours later.

in the meantime though, since the scare happened at night, there was a trip to walmart to procure dog parasite shampoo and herbal lice remover. so the rat just took it while i slathered this lice stuff on him and had to let it sit for 10 minutes. he must have been miserable because he was so good, and didn't move or try to eat it or anything. I tried to comb out the lice, but there were just too many and it was kind of a lost cause.

so we turned to the shower, which had to happen because of all the crap in his fur anyway. the shower was the only option in the dorms, so there i was, in the shower with the illicit and pissed off rat. And that's how i came to have slash marks all over my torso, including across a nipple.

but the lice are gone, and we are both much happier. so don't buy walmart bedding. PS--the rat is currently chewing my bedsheets, which means my life is now officially a JKR book.

Keep a blunt object at hand if he happens to turn into a creepy old man.

(I once wrote a bad Star trek fic called Mulciber. This has nothing to do with your rat.)

musesfool and sociofemme have both suggested similar things, especially since he's been very clingy as of late. Too many moves back and forth, I fear, the poor little guy needs a lot of pack support.

they so are the best pets ever. Small, clean, and they really like being your pet. Plus they eat whatever you eat. cookie? here you go, rat. Soda? why sure, go at it. and you can toss a rat out a window and have them fall four stories and land on asphalt, and they will still get up and walk away because their bones are so light. That's pretty fucking cool.

yet I still have to explain to half the people I tell I want to have a rat for a pet that people do, in fact, have rats as pets, and they would make good pets, and dammit, they are not only found running around in subways...

Do you have to keep him in a cage a lot?

they're the best pets, they're so affectionate and interested in what you're doing.

Usually when i'm in the room, i have him out. He tools around my desk a lot, or rides around on my shoulder sometimes. Male rats are little dribbly pee-ers, so i have to wipe up after him and be careful what he can walk across, but he's really good about not chewing cords and things. He's got a little box next to my computer he can curl up in and take a nap too.

Do female rats NOT do the dribbly pee?

I like the whole rat ownership idea, but find the dribbly pee phenomenon prohibitive.

not really, they sort of save it up until they can piddle on you all in one go. Which i feel you would also be against. Males just tend to scent mark whatever they wander across more often.

He's adorable, especially the tummy rubs! I plan to graduate from hamsters to rats next year when I get a house. Do you have any quality cage recommendations?

Rats are a million times better than hamsters!

Mulciber just lives in a glass terrarium, but honestly, they will live in anything pretty much. Big bird or hamster cages with different levels are good for them cause then they can climb around on ladders and things.

I mean, if you're playing with the rat a lot, it really doesn't matter what they live in, so long as they have a little box or something to hide in.
