networking issue
Aug. 20th, 2004 05:46 pmso, we have the netgear router, and everything is fine internet-wise. Both ibooks are on the internet wirelessly, and the imac is on via an ethernet cable.
But I can't figure out how to set up a local network, even though i know it's possible. Does anybody know how to do this? It would be really easy if somebody had directions on how to create an appletalk zone, but I'll be goddamned if I can find any.
can somebody tell me how to set up a local network for two ibooks running OS X and an imac running 9?

Date: 2004-08-20 02:57 pm (UTC)For OS 9, it's similar, filesharing on, appletalk on. (I have a powerbook running 8.6 that occasionally has trouble finding the other computers, but they can usually find me.)
You may need to restart each computer, and also restart the router.

Date: 2004-08-20 03:25 pm (UTC)I asked my boyfriend for advice, but not being able to be there and poke and prod he has no other suggestions. I do know that when I connect my 8.6 powerbook to the network, I have to set it to connect on launch for it to be able to properly find my OS X box.
Is there some reason you can't just upgrade the imac to OS X? I've seen panther running on a revB even, anything later than that all you'd need is a firmware update.
I've probably been not entirely helpful. ^^;;; Good luck anyhow.

Date: 2004-08-20 03:34 pm (UTC)it's not like the OS X systems are rocking out either really. we are now at the point where the printer has an IP address, but neither of our computers are connecting to it.
well, thanks anyway, you knew more than me.

i love Remus' WTF expression. Scared him right in the middle of a letter no doubt:
Dear Molly, things here are well, not much to re/\/\/\...sorry about that, Sirius is shouting things like 'naked' and 'snape' and scared the daylights out of me...

Date: 2004-08-21 11:43 pm (UTC)I wonder if you checked your "personal file sharing" on both of the puters using OS 10.? I also have had issues, but always with my puter running OS 9. (.. my brother said it's because that operating system doesn't like 10.. *giggles helplessly* as if..) anyway.
Do your two running 10 have a firewall? Cause I know that did enter into the problems I had for a while too! I had to get an ethernet "switch"? and I was a real basket case for a while till I figured out the firewall it threw up.

Date: 2004-08-22 08:58 am (UTC)I think you are absolutely right about 9 not liking 10. certainly the imac carries a deep disdain for the ibook.
I haven't set up a firewall, but if they have one automatically I haven't fooled with any settings pertaining to that. I don't believe I have one up, it's never interfered with any other sort of filesharing.
thanks for helping :)
