so, we have the netgear router, and everything is fine internet-wise. Both ibooks are on the internet wirelessly, and the imac is on via an ethernet cable.

But I can't figure out how to set up a local network, even though i know it's possible. Does anybody know how to do this? It would be really easy if somebody had directions on how to create an appletalk zone, but I'll be goddamned if I can find any.

can somebody tell me how to set up a local network for two ibooks running OS X and an imac running 9?

For the two running OS X, all you should need to do is turn file sharing on. They should automatically find eachother on the network. (To search the network for servers, it should be cmd-shft-K in 10.3 I think. in 10.2 it's just cmd-K)

For OS 9, it's similar, filesharing on, appletalk on. (I have a powerbook running 8.6 that occasionally has trouble finding the other computers, but they can usually find me.)

You may need to restart each computer, and also restart the router.

hmm. All the computers have had filesharing on the whole time, so far as i can tell. I can see ellen's computer, but not the imac. The imac can see both computers but can connect to neither. Everything's been restarted at least once since the network went up.

I am very confused.

Networking voodoo... O_o

I asked my boyfriend for advice, but not being able to be there and poke and prod he has no other suggestions. I do know that when I connect my 8.6 powerbook to the network, I have to set it to connect on launch for it to be able to properly find my OS X box.

Is there some reason you can't just upgrade the imac to OS X? I've seen panther running on a revB even, anything later than that all you'd need is a firmware update.

I've probably been not entirely helpful. ^^;;; Good luck anyhow.

ha, the imac would probably just explode if i tried to put OS X on in. I had a friend at school who did that, and the computer ran slow as ass, because imacs are just not made to support it.

it's not like the OS X systems are rocking out either really. we are now at the point where the printer has an IP address, but neither of our computers are connecting to it.

well, thanks anyway, you knew more than me.

*rolls on floor laughing*

I am SO printing that out to put above my computer. if i could, you know, get the damn thing to print

i love Remus' WTF expression. Scared him right in the middle of a letter no doubt:

Dear Molly, things here are well, not much to re/\/\/\...sorry about that, Sirius is shouting things like 'naked' and 'snape' and scared the daylights out of me...

Came over here from pond's journal and after asking my mac geek dad, he thinks it may have something to do with which version of osx you're using. From what he was saying 10.2 or 10.3 should have no problems reading the os9 imac.

I don't know if that helps at all, but hell, it's a suggestion. Good luck with getting this worked out!

well, sociofemme's is 10.2 and mine is 10.3, and neither of ours are seeing it. I wish there was a way to just hold the laptop in front of the computer and be like "THERE! THERE IT IS!" Thanks though.

and your icon is great. I miss good old Mulder...

If you want, I can either ask this question on a Mac Guild on Gaia or post a link to this entry on the guild. They have some really good troubleshooters there. *nod nod* I would help but I don't know much about networking or Mac troubleshooting at all =(.

if you think somebody could help, i'm open to suggestions at this point. thank you!

the ibooks are running 10.2 and 10.3 respectively, and the imac is 9.2.2.

M'kay, I posted yesterday and am now waiting for replies. The server has been crap lately, so it might be a while before the replies start coming in. Plus the forum is kind of slow D: So it might take a while. Sorry. ^^;

HI;
I wonder if you checked your "personal file sharing" on both of the puters using OS 10.? I also have had issues, but always with my puter running OS 9. (.. my brother said it's because that operating system doesn't like 10.. *giggles helplessly* as if..) anyway.

Do your two running 10 have a firewall? Cause I know that did enter into the problems I had for a while too! I had to get an ethernet "switch"? and I was a real basket case for a while till I figured out the firewall it threw up.

yup, file sharing is on for everything. I just came from my school network where things had no trouble connecting to each other, but I really don't have any idea how to set up my own little appletalk zone or anything like that.

I think you are absolutely right about 9 not liking 10. certainly the imac carries a deep disdain for the ibook.

I haven't set up a firewall, but if they have one automatically I haven't fooled with any settings pertaining to that. I don't believe I have one up, it's never interfered with any other sort of filesharing.

thanks for helping :)
