Is there anybody else who can't see the hearts and other HTML symbols with their firefox? Mine is all updated and everything, but all I see below are a bunch of vertical lines:

♥ ♥ ♥

I have the latest version and everything! is it just a mac problem? I want to seeeee!

Why is my googlefu so freaking weak lately?

First thoughts, unGoogled (and thus unverified):

1. Check your character encoding for Firefox. On my laptop (which is Linux), I find it under the "View" menu. I think it should be Western ISO-8859-1, Unicode UTF-8, or ASCII.

2. Check that you have either the Symbol font installed.

Are you using a Mac or Windows PC?

Okay, ignore my question about Mac vs. Windows. Shoddy reading of your entry.

It's set to the Western ISO-8859-1 as a default. I tried switching to the other ones and got no change. I've also tried just forcing firefox to display only in fonts I pick; no change.

What's really bizarre is that if i copy and paste them into this comment box, they will appear as hearts! but then once the comment is actually posted, back to bars.

Yeah, i have Apple Symbol, which is the 10.4 equivalent of Symbol and works the same. The old computer just had regular Symbol, and it wouldn't display them there either.

Your mac displays them? I think this is all a plan to thwart me.

A-ha! So maybe the problem isn't with your computer, but your LJ account not being able to display the symbols.

Check "Manage -> Info". Near the bottom of the page is a section called "Encoding Options". It's only supposed to be useful for old LJ entries, but you never know...

And I don't have a Mac. I use Linux. (Which explains my "Why don't you try this?" system of fixing things.) Anyway, us alternative OS people need to stick together.

it isn't just LJ, i can't see the hearts anyplace in firefox, except these random comment windows, cause it uses some other font. but even then, since it's an HTML special symbol thing, it shouldn't matter at all what font it's using. This is so. frustrating.

No luck with the info managing. This is such a stupid little thing, i can't believe they haven't just fixed it.

Ugh.

I'm almost out of ideas. The only thought I've got left is that maybe you can get around it by changing your default fonts for Firefox.

I can see the hearts, but I have a Dell desktop, so I'm not much help in this matter. However, I AM using firefox... so it might just be a Mac thing.

I have that problem when I'm using Firefox on Gonagall, but when I'm using IE they're about the only thing on LJ that shows up right.

I can see the hearts when it's on your lj, but if it's a comment, I get gibberish. It's firefox, I say. (But I had this with Explorer too, once upon a while.) Try switching to Unicode. Sometimes it works for me.

*reads comments above* Oh never mind- I have a dell too.

What is the code for a heart picture rather than a lessthan3 heart?

Toshiba running Windows XP and Firefox; I see three picture hearts, but when I leave lessthan3 in a comment, the lessthan symbol shows up and all the text after it gets cut off.

I have a mac--I can't see hearts in Firefox, but they show up fine in Safari. It's gotta be the Fox, man.

Definitely Firefox. I did an experiment. I was reading in Safari on my Mac and seeing everything just fine. Copied the entry's URL and opened it in Firefox. Voila! Vertical lines. Though I feel like I remember seeing hearts in Firefox at work, so I'll check sometime today and get back to you. :)

Apparently, I remembered wrong. No hearts. (Am at work.)
